What you are paying for
A composite door has a solid insulated core inside a moulded skin. It is heavier than uPVC, it keeps its colour and woodgrain far better in British weather, and it feels like a front door when you close it. For the door people see first, that is usually worth it.
The price here is a standard door in a standard opening. Side panels, a top light, a new frame in an unusual size or a lot of making good around the opening all add to it, and they are the first things to ask about when two quotes do not match.
Why two quotes for the same door differ so much
The same composite door, to the same specification, settles at about 1.6 times as much with one national installer as with another. That gap is bigger than the difference between composite and uPVC. It is the reason the figure above is a range, and the reason to get more than one quote.
What affects the price of a composite door
Size: the figure above is a standard single door. Wider or taller openings need a made-to-measure frame.
Glazing: a solid door is the base; glazed panels, decorative glass and side panels or a top light add to it.
Hardware and colour: handles, letterplates, knockers and locks vary, and most colours are available — a two-colour door (one colour outside, white inside) is common.
Frame, removal and installation: the price includes a new frame, taking the old door away, fitting and sealing. Re-forming a damaged opening, a new threshold or step, and internal decorating are not included.
